TUCSON, Ariz. - With a pair of scores under 300, the University of Arizona Wildcat men's golf team finished the final two rounds of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate and landed in eleventh place (878/+14) Sunday in Palm Desert, Calif. With three players in the top five, UNLV won the team race with a final score of 844.
In second place, Texas Tech finished with a score of 851, seven strokes behind UNLV's twenty-under finish. Auburn University finished in third place with a score of 855 (-9). In the individual race, UNLV's Kevin Penner took first with a final score of 209 (-7). Teammate Derek Ernst finished in a tie for second place along with Baylor's Joakim Mikkelson, both finishing with a score of 210 (-6).
For Arizona, junior Juan Pablo Hernandez was the only Wildcat to finish at even par for the tournament with a final score of 216 for a tie for 21st place. Behind Hernandez was freshman Brenden Redfern, who finished in a tie for twenty-seventh with a final score of 217 (+1). Sophomore Erik Oja finished in a tie for 68th (225/+9), followed by freshman Tucker Wadkins in a tie for 78th (227/+11). Sophomore Chris Capofinished in a tie for 88th (229/+13).
Up next, the Wildcats travel to Fresno, Calif. to participate in the Fresno State Lexus Classic, which commences on Monday, March 5.
