TUCSON, Ariz. - Current professional golfer Jim Furyk has earmarked $100,000 for the University of Arizona following his participation in the 2002 Ryder Cup matches.

As member of the 2002 United States Ryder Cup team, the PGA Tour of America is donating $200,000 to the charities of Furyk's choice, half of which will go to the University of Arizona.

Furyk, a member of the Arizona men's golf team from 1988-92, has been a member of the PGA Tour since 1993. In that span, he has won seven tour events and played in the last three Ryder Cup matches.

While at Arizona, Furyk was a member of Arizona's 1992 national championship team. He was a two-time All-American and a three-time all-Pac-10 selection. His 176 career rounds played ranks fourth in Arizona history.

A Mary J. Roby Academic Award winner in 1989 and 1991, Furyk was inducted into the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Of Furyk's donation to his alma mater, $20,000 will go directly to the men's golf program. The remaining $80,000 will be used in conjunction with the PGA of America's Growth of the Game initiative, "Golf: For Business and Life." The initiative introduces golf to college juniors and seniors, familiarizes them with the game, and teaches them how to use golf as a business tool.

One of the most generous former UA student-athletes, Furyk also has made donations following his two previous Ryder Cup and two Presidents Cup appearances.

Each player and captain of the 2002 U.S. Ryder Cup team each contributed $200,000 to various charitable categories. The PGA of America established this plan in 1999, where the organization will distribute a total of $2.6 million to charities and universities throughout the nation on behalf of the U.S. participants in the Ryder Cup matches.
