PALO ALTO, Calif. ?- 57th-ranked Arizona senior Roger Matalonga upset No. 35 Roger Gubser of Texas in the NCAA 1st round of singles play. Matalonga improves to 21-14 on the year while Gubser finishes 31-10. This is Matalonga’s second appearance in the singles portion of the NCAA tournament. Last season, Matalonga fell in the first round.
“I played very solid,” said Matalonga. “The whole match I was very focused. We both know each other and we both have a lot of respect for each other. Today, I was just more aggressive. In this tournament, I can focus on myself and I don’t have to worry about the other matches. This win means a lot because I never know when my last match will be. I just want to have fun and enjoy the tournament.”
Matalonga defeated Gubser is straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
“Today, Roger played a solid and composed match,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “He kept focus throughout and when he can do that he plays well. It’s a great win for Roger and he really deserves to well in the tournament. It is a great way for him to end his career.”
