TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 19 Arizona men’s tennis team downed the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs by the score of 7-0 today at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center to improve its record to 13-1.

 

The Cats started fast in doubles, taking leads on all three courts. The team of Andres Carrasco and Andres Arango was the first Arizona duo to finish, topping Blake Wardman and Andre Dome, 8-4.

 

Jay Goldman and Ola Baake then took care of Robert Foy and Darryn Young, 8-4, followed by Pat Metham and Francois VanderMerwe who completed the trifecta by winning 8-4 as well.

 

After winning the doubles point, Arizona moved to singles play where it did not miss a beat. Ravid Hazi, playing on court four, beat Alex Sonesson by the count of 6-3, 6-4.

 

On court two, Arango overwhelmed Andy Gerst, topping the Mustang in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Court one ace Jay Goldman followed suit as he beat Dome, 6-3, 6-2.

 

Freshman Jason Zafiros, who entered today’s match with a record of 12-0, squeaked out a third set tie-breaker against Wardman to remain perfect. Zafiros’ scores were 6-2, 5-7, 10-7.

 

“I’m proud of the way the boys came out and battled today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “We need to rest up for tomorrow and come out strong against Iowa.”

 

Arizona resumes play tomorrow as they take on Iowa beginning at noon at the Robson Tennis Center.
