WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. Shelly Schultz was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for her two clutch hits to defeat No. 2 UCLA twice last weekend. The honor is the first for Schultz, whose walk-off hits allowed No. 1 Arizona to claim the top spot in the nation for the fourth week in a row.
In Saturday's game versus UCLA, Arizona trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Three walks and a single put a run on the board for the Cats and left the bases loaded with one out for Mackenzie Vandergeest, who homered to tie the game at five apiece. Jackie Coburn drew a walk, and Schultz came to the plate with two out. Schultz drove a homer to left center, winning the game for the Cats.
Sunday's game was nearly identical to the matchup the night before. Arizona trailed 4-1 going into the sixth. Caitlin Lowe hit a three-run homer to tie the game, and Schultz once again came through under pressure, knocking a line drive down the left field line with runners on the corners, scoring Kristie Fox for the win.
Schultz and the Wildcats will be in action again this weekend when they head north to Tempe to face off with Arizona State on Friday, April 9th and Saturday, April 10th.
