TUCSON, Ariz. ?C Three golfers with University of Arizona tied are competing in the 2007 United States Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Trey Denton, a senior from Canton, Miss, finished the two rounds of stroke play with an eight-over 148 total, which places him in a tie for 143rd place with about half the field still on the course. Denton carded a six-over 76 on the Lakeside Course yesterday and rebounded with a two-over 72 during todayˇ?s round on the Ocean Course. As of 4:05 p.m. PDT today, Denton was still inside the projected 64-man cutline.
Tyler Neal, a junior from Tucson, Ariz., posted a two-round total of 158 (+18), which placed him in 279th place. He opened play with an 80 (+10) yesterday on the Lakeside Course and a 78 (+8) today on the Ocean Course.
Nathan Tyler, who completed his eligibility for the Wildcats last spring, stood in a tie for second place after yesterdayˇ?s first round with a two-under 68 on the Ocean Course. He was scheduled to begin his second round today at 4:15 p.m. PDT.
Just last Saturday, Tyler won the Arizona Amateur championship with a 7 and 5 victory in the final match.
Following the completion of the second round of stroke play, the field will be cut to the top 64 players and match play will be used for the remainder of the event.
The 107th U.S. Amateur Championship runs through Aug. 26, at the Olympic Club. The Lakeside Course is a par-70, 6,948-yard layout, while the Ocean Course is a par-70, 6,786-yard layout. Match play will be held exclusively on the Lakeside Course.
