TUCSON, Ariz.- The No. 21-ranked Arizona baseball team completed a three-game sweep over Wagner with a 13-1 victory at Frank Sancet Field on Saturday. The win ended a perfect 5-0 week for the team and improved its record 17-7 overall for the season. Wagner, which scored only one run in three games, fell to 0-10 with the loss.
Arizona starter Kevin Guyette (2-1) picked up his second win of the season on the strength of an eight inning, four-hit performance. The right-hander struck out a career-high eight Seahawk batters and surrendered just one unearned run to help Arizona complete its third series sweep of the season. Senior Wes Zlotoff closed out the game with a hitless ninth.
Offensively Arizona rapped out 14 hits in the game, including three, two-run homers. Freshmen Brad Boyer, Trevor Crowe and Derek Decater combined to go 6 for 14 with the three home runs, seven RBIs and five runs scored in the contest. For Boyer, the home run was his third of the season, while Decater and Crowe each tallied their second.
Sophomore Jeff Van Houten followed his 3 for 3 outing on Friday with a 2 for 2, two-run day at the plate on Saturday. The outfielder finished the series 6 for 7 for an .857 batting average with six RBIs and four runs scored.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Nogales, Ariz., for a neutral site meeting with New Mexico. First pitch at War Memorial Stadium is set for 7 p.m. KNST (790-AM) will broadcast the game live.
