Postgame Quotes

Arizona Head Coach Lute Olson Quotes:

“(NAU) played really well against us. Frankly they have played well all year. They have really exceptional shooters from the three point arc.”

“Our biggest problem in the first half was our shooting and our screens falling through. We switched everything in the second half and that’s the reason we won, by switching the way people played defense and getting the guys to take different shots.”

“J.P. (Prince) played really well tonight with 10 assists and only one turnover; that’s a great ratio. He has gained a lot his season so far. He is such a long-bodied player that he can seal the defense. If we can get him to be more aggressive on offense by penetrating the ball down the middle, he will be set. But that’s the story of a freshman; there is always something to work on and to improve. J.P. is a great defensive player, that’s one of the most important qualities about him.”

“Marcus (Williams) keeps getting better and better with each day. He is like a sponge; when he woks on things he absorbs them right away to make use of them later.”

“(Hassan) Adams had a great second half. I told him at halftime that something had to change on the court and he did it. He changed his shooting and his defensive play. He is the leader on the team, so I put it up to him to turn things around.”

“(Kirk) Walters showed signs of improvement tonight. We are still working on his aggressiveness under the basket though. I told him that we need him to perform and in the second half of this game he was much more active.”

“In the first half we had some unbelievable chances for shots; there were a lot of open opportunities that we missed. We have to start making those and in order to do that we have to work on our outside shooting because tonight it was just not there. The shots were there, but few of them were made.”

“This team needs a good solid defense and offense. When we do finally start hitting our shots, we need to rebound and play smart defense to create turnovers for the other team, those are our biggest keys to success.”

Arizona Student-Athlete Quotes

Senior Guard/Forward Hassan Adams

“I told him (Chris Rodgers) to put this game behind him. Everyone is going to have games like that, but we’re going to need him. We’ve got a game Saturday (against St. Mary’s) and he’s going to be ready.”

On the play of freshman Marcus Williams and J.P. Prince:

“That’s what this team is about. I know when I was in that situation three years ago I just tried to play hard and provide a spark. They did that tonight and that’s what this team needs.”

“We came in to this came playing to protect our home court. We come out to play for our fans and our friends. We have to go out and play our butts off.”

“He (head coach Lute Olson) wasn’t disappointed. He just expected us to play better. We know we have to keep getting better.”

Junior Center Kirk Walters

“We played sloppy in the first half. Our defense wasn’t what it needed to be. Our offense was better in the second half. We’re getting close to being a really good team.”

“J.P. and Marcus stepped up big time. They both played really well. Marcus gave us good scoring and J.P. played great on defense and had some amazing passes. They did a great job.”

“In the first half we settled for a lot of three’s. In the second half we moved the ball better and cut through the holes of the defense. If we do that, the three’s will come.”

“Coach ?'O’ told me at halftime to seek the ball more and establish my position in the post.”

Freshman Forward Marcus Williams

“I tried to go in and give a spark off the bench. As a freshman, I’m just trying to make a positive impact any way I can and play the best I can.”

“I’ve been working hard in practice and in games to just get better each time out. We played such harsh competition early in the year there wasn’t much time to get comfortable. I’m playing much more under control now.”

“They (Northern Arizona) are obviously a talented team even though they may not play in a big conference. It took us some time to learn their personnel, but we executed better in the second half. We can play better, but a win is a win.”

Freshman Guard J.P. Prince

“It was disappointing. We wanted to get a big lead early, but we didn’t. You have to give them credit. They played well. They played smart. They did what they needed to do to keep the game close.”

“I need to come in and step up for the team. I need to get my job done. I did that tonight.”

“He (head coach Lute Olson) was a little upset after the game. He’s always going to have something to say. We have to listen to what he says. We need to have better shot selection.”

“I’m a point guard and I can lead. My role is to be the best I can be. That’s what Coach Olson and Josh (Pastner) have told me.”
