Neal, Tyler claim spots in the event at San Franciscoˇ?s Olympic Club
TUCSON, Ariz. ?C Two University of Arizona menˇ?s golfers qualified to play in the 2007 United States Amateur Championship, as Tyler Neal and Nathan Tyler claimed spots in sectional qualifying on Tuesday.
Neal, a junior-to-be from Tucson, Ariz., claimed the fifth and final qualifying slot at Wigwam Country Club in Litchfield Park, Ariz., in a playoff.? He carded a 73-68ˇ?141 total to get into the playoff before winning it with a par on the first hole.
It will be the second consecutive U.S. Amateur Championship appearance for Neal, who also qualified for the 2006 event.? Neal posted a 75.60 stroke average in 15 rounds played in 2006-07, including four rounds at par or better.? His low round was a 71.
Tyler, a 2007 UA graduate from Tucson, Ariz., won the same qualifier at Wigwam Country Club with a 67-68ˇ?135 total.? He topped the field by one stroke.? It will be his first career U.S. Amateur Championship appearance.
Tyler ranked second on the team with a 71.97 stroke average in 31 rounds played in 2006-07 and finished with five top-20 finishes and a team-leading 18 rounds at par or better.? Tyler was an honorable mention all-Pac-10 pick this season.
The 107th U.S. Amateur Championship will be held, Aug. 20-26, at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
