WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ?- Arizona pitcher Taryne Mowatt and second baseman Chelsie Mesa earned this week’s Pac-10 Pitcher and Player of the Week honors, respectively, for their performances in UA’s three-game sweep over No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette this past weekend.

Mowatt earned all three victories in UA's sweep of the Ragin’ Cajuns.  The sophomore from Corona, Calif., started two of the three games, pitching 16.0 innings and giving up just one run on the weekend.

“It’s exciting.  We got to go up against an incredible hitting team in Louisiana-Lafayette, and as a team we got the job done,” Mowatt said of her second consecutive Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor.  “It’s a great way to go into Pac-10 play ?- feeling good.  I also feel great for Chelsie.  She had a solid set of games, and she makes my job as a pitcher a lot easier when she’s driving in all those runs.”

On Friday, Mowatt tossed a seven-inning, two-hit shutout, striking out 12 opposing hitters while walking just one.  Her performance was especially notable, as it was the first time Louisiana-Lafayette's prolific offense had been shut out all season.

On Saturday, Mowatt threw another complete-game, this time giving up one run.  Then on Sunday, she threw four innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit.  All told, Mowatt allowed one run, nine hits and two walks, while striking out 26 hitters in 16.0 innings of work.

Mesa batted .636 (7-for-11) and slugged 1.182 in Arizona’s trio of games.  The junior fromYuma, Ariz., wrapped up non-conference play with a bang, driving in five runs and scoring four herself, while and also hitting a home run, a triple and a double.

Mesa’s best game of the series came on Sunday, when she went 4-for-4 at the plate.  The four-hit performance was the first of her career and third for any Arizona player this year.  In addition to coming up just a home run short of the cycle, Mesa was successful in her only steal attempt of the weekend.

This is Mowatt’s second Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor, and the fourth for a UA hurler this year.  This is the first time Mesa has been recognized with Pac-10 weekly honors and the second time for a UA hitter in 2006.
