OPELIKA, Ala. - A Halt in play because of lighting in the middle of Tuesday's first round action of the NCAA Championship added to the disappointing start for the Arizona Wildcats in Opelika, Ala. Arizona finds themselves tied with four other teams in ninth place after round one.
The Wildcats shot a 14-over-par 302 to trail first-round leader, Oklahoma State by 14 strokes after the cowboys shot even-par 288. Duke and UCLA are tied in second at 1-over-par 289. Ohio State stands solo in the fourth position after carding an 8-over-par 296. Wake Forest (298) and Vanderbilt (298) are tied for fifth.
Sophomore Cassandra Kirkland is tied for 58th after shooting 4-over-par 76. Sophomore Erica Blasberg is tied for 83rd at 6-over-par 78. Junior Mar Garcia is tied for 105th place after shooting 8-over-par 80 in round one.
The weather doesn't look any better; the forecast predicts chance of thunderstorms for Wednesday. However, the Wildcats will look to improve when they tee off in Wednesday's second round beginning at 8:50 a.m. CST. The tournament is being held at Grand National Lake Course, par 72 over 6,215 yards.
