Liaw’s even-par 140 puts him in a tie for fourth place

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona’s men’s golf team continues to struggle to break par as the Wildcats stand in a tie for 11th place Sunday at The Preview by Ping & Golfweek in Owings Mills, Md.

Arizona golfers broke par only one time in Sunday’s 36 holes en route to a 29-over-par total of 589, which places the team in a tie for 11th place with Pepperdine heading into tomorrow’s final round.  Oklahoma State leads the 15-team field with a four-over-par tall of 564.  TCU (567), Georgia Tech (567), Texas (573) and Florida (574) round out the top five places.

UA sophomore Henry Liaw was the lone bright spot Sunday for the Wildcats, as the sophomore from Rowland Heights, Calif., carded rounds of 69 and 71 en route to a 36-hole score of even-par 140.  He is in a three-way tie for fourth place, just five strokes behind Oklahoma State’s Pablo Martin.

Liaw’s one-under 69 to open the tournament was Arizona’s first under par round in 25 individual rounds played this season and just the second round at par or better.

Also competing for the Wildcats was sophomore Nathan Tyler, who is tied for 23rd place at 145 (+5), senior Nathan Lashley, who is tied for 55th place at 151 (+11), and sophomores Josh Esler and Mark Lamb, who are both tied for 59th place at 153 (+13).

The Preview by Ping & Golfweek concludes Monday at Caves Valley Golf Course, a par 70, 7,124-yard layout.  The course will host the 2005 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.
