TUCSON-- Day one of the first annual Arizona Fall Classic saw the Wildcats face quality competition. The tournament was put together at the last minute to allow some players an opportunity to see game action.

"This year the tournament is small," head coach Tad Berkowitz said. "Hopefully we can build on this and one day make it great."

For Arizona, Francois Van der Merwe, Jason Zafiros and Ola Bakke all played quality matches.

After a first round bye, Van der Merwe won his only match of the day.

Zafiros won the two matches that he played in. And Bakke won his morning match, but lost his second match.

"Overall, I'm pleased with how our guys are playing," Berkowitz said. "Our two freshmen played well. The purpose of this tournament is for our guys to gain valuable experience before the spring season."

Zafiros and Van der Merwe advanced in the doubles matches to the semifinals.

NOTES:

-Francois will play J. Visagie (NAU) tomorrow and 9:00 a.m.

-Zafiros will play at 9:00 a.m. as well vs. Brass of New Mexico

Zafiros/Van der Merwe will play Reiff/Pezzuto of Northern Arizona.
