Tucson, Ariz. -- On Saturday, October 28, 2006, dozens of strong and creative Tucson women will be using their skills or acquiring new ones to build homes for Habitat for Humanity Tucson and the low-income families it serves. Habitat Tucson has recruited many eager volunteers for its Women Build?® Day, which is sponsored by Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores. The event will take place at Habitat’s Balboa/Laguna site, a community on the Southwest corner of those two streets near the intersection of Oracle Road and Glenn.
“Habitat’s female volunteers are great to work with,” said Michael McDonald, Executive Director of Habitat Tucson. “They really get excited and take pride in learning and doing things right.”
Habitat and Lowe’s are pleased Tucson’s First Lady, Beth Walkup will appear at the Lunch Program and Silent Auction. They are also excited to welcome the University of Arizona’s Women’s Basketball Team, Coaches and Staff, including Head Coach Joan Bonvicini. The ladies from the UA will be on hand during the second work shift to support the program and possibly hammer a nail or paint a wall.
All of the women who have volunteered for the build will be working alongside Habitat and Lowe’s staffers on the inside and outside of these homes and tackling everything from framing, to installing insulation, and hanging drywall. For those who have a green thumb there will be gardening opportunities as well. The work will be done in a morning shift and an afternoon shift, with a lunch and silent auction program in between.
