TEMPE, Ariz. ?- The Arizona women’s golf team stands in sixth place after the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University.  The Wildcats carded a nine-over par 297 on Friday, putting them twelve strokes behind tournament leader ASU.

Oklahoma State’s Pernilla Lindberg is the current leader after carding a four-under par 68 in the first round.

The tournament is being held at the Karsten Golf Course, which stretches 6,230 yards and is a par 72.

“We just got off to a slow start, but not a terrible start,” Head Coach Greg Allen said.  “We made bogies at first and it seemed like forever for our birdies to drop.  We were just kind of moving along at first, but that turned on the front side.”

“All of the birdies came in a spurt, so we were able to fight back and move up the leader board,” Allen explained.  “Adriana (Zwanck) made a long birdie on the 13th hole and then we had four birdies on the 14th hole.”

Junior Mary Jacobs is the lone Wildcat in the top-10, finishing the first round in a tie for seventh.  The Godfrey, Ill., native shot a one-under par 71, including four birdies, during Friday’s play.

Defending tournament individual champion sophomore Adriana Zwanck currently stands in a tie for 16th after carding a 73 (+1).

“I told the team that today is about as bad as it could get,” Allen said.  “But we got a great round out of Mary (Jacobs) and a good round out of Adriana (Zwanck).”

Freshman Emily Mason stands in a tie for 44th after shooting an individual season low of 76 (+4).

Junior Alison Walshe is tied for 50th with a first round score of 77 (+5).

“Anytime your top player shoots five over par, you are going to have trouble doing well,” Allen said of Walshe.  “But we will look to her to do well tomorrow.  She was having trouble with her driver today, but she definitely hung in there, especially with her birdies on the 14th and 15th holes.”

Sophomore Amanda Wilson is currently tied for 73rd after shooting an eight-over par 80.

Competing as an individual for the Wildcats is sophomore Marisa Smith, who is tied for 69th after shooting a 79 (+7) in the opening round.

“We know that we are capable of coming out tomorrow and putting in a good round,” said Allen.  “I believe in this team.  I know that we are twelve back (in this tournament), but we are really trying to gain momentum, especially heading into the post-season.”
