TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team is in 11th place after the first round of the ASU/Thunderbird Invitational Friday in Tempe, Ariz.
Arizona carded an opening-round 291 (+7) in the 17-team event and sits in 11th place, 15 shots behind tournament-leader California (278). BYU (280), San Diego State (282) and Washington (284) rounded out the top-four places.
Zachary Blair of BYU and Austin Quick of host Arizona State shared the first round individual lead in the field of 95 after both posted five-under 66s.
Arizona was led by sophomore Erik Oja, who is tied for 14th place at one-under 71. The native of Sandviken, Sweden, who has been the Wildcats' top finisher in the last two events, posted Arizona's lone round under par over the opening 18 holes. He's been under par in four of his last six rounds played.
Freshman Tucker Wadkins also stands in the top-30 places, as the native of Dallas, Texas, tallied a one-over 72 and is tied for 26th place. Teammate Trent Redfern is tied for 42nd place at three-over 74.
Junior Juan Pablo Hernandez is tied for 58th place at four-over 75. Senior Philip Bagdade and freshman Alex McMahon are tied for 62nd place after posting first-round 76s (+5). McMahon is competing in this event as an individual.
Freshman Brenden Redfern, also competing as an individual, is tied for 86th place at nine-over 80.
The 54-hole ASU/Thunderbird Invitational continues through Saturday at the Karsten Golf Course, a par-71, 7,026-yard layout. Final-round action is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. PDT.
