TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona baseball team (35-21) will open the 2003 NCAA postseason tournament on Friday in Fullerton, Calif., against Big East champion Notre Dame. The regional bid is Arizona's first since 1999 and is just the second for the program since 1993.

"We're excited to be back in the postseason," second-year Arizona head coach Andy Lopez said. "The players and coaches have worked hard all season long to get to this point and we're ready to get started."

The Wildcats, who will be making their 30th all-time regional appearance, have won three national titles and played in 14 College World Series in school history.

Arizona features a pair of nine game winners on the mound in Sean Rierson (9-2) and Richie Gardner (9-2) and an offense that can claim a .329 team batting average, 122 doubles, 50 triples, 71 home runs and 142 stolen bases.

Junior Brian Anderson (.375, 14 HR, 61 RBI) and sophomore Jeff Van Houten (.415, 11 HR, 71 RBI) pace the potent Arizona offense.
