TUCSON - Former University of Arizona Wildcat women's basketball standout Ify Ibekwe has been signed by the San Antonio Silver Stars of the Women's National Basketball Association, it was announced by head coach and general manager Dan Hughes on Thursday.

A 6-2 forward, Ibekwe was selected by Seattle in the second round (24th overall) of the 2011 WNBA Draft and played in three games with the Storm last season. She began the 2011-12 offseason with Belgium's Dexia Namur where she averaged 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game through 12 domestic league contests and 21.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in EuroCup play. A two-time Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Ibekwe moved to play with Spain's Burgos beginning in February.

In 2010-11, Ibekwe paced women's basketball to a 21-12 record, the best since the 2003-04 season, and the first postseason appearance since the 2004-05 season. Ibekwe led the Cats in scoring with 16.1 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game. She had 14 double-doubles, 25 games in double-digit scoring and 15 games in double-digit rebounding.

She was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, All-Pac-10 and a member of the Pac-10 All-Defensive Team. Ibekwe ended her UA career as the only player in Arizona history to record 1,000+ points and 1,000+ rebounds and the only player to average a career double-double (14.3 points, 10.3 rebounds).

The Silver Stars open the 2012 season on May 19 at Tulsa before tipping off the home schedule against the Chicago Sky. The 2012 season will mark the teams 10th anniversary in San Antonio, as the Utah Starzz relocated to the Alamo City in 2003. In operation since 1997, the WNBA - which features 12 teams - is the most successful women's professional team sports league in the world.
