TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 59 University of Arizona women’s tennis team picked up a pair of wins at home this weekend with wins coming yesterday against the University of Memphis and today against Oregon University.  The Cats won today 5-2 to clinch their first Pac-10 win of the season.

“Our team did a really nice job today,” said head coach Vicky Maes.  “The Ducks are always tough to play because they grind no matter what the score. We squeezed out the doubles point at three which gave us awesome momentum going into the singles. I was proud of our spirit and the fact that we managed to carry our intensity all the way through the match.”

The Wildcats battled for the doubles point.  On court two, seniors Natalia Toporowska and Claire Rietsch fell 8-6 to Oregon’s Julia Metzger and Subine Fuchs, but the Wildcats tied it at one match apiece on court one.  Sophomore Natasha Marks and freshman Alexandrina Naydenova defeated Pavlina Smatova and Trudie du Toit 8-5.  The doubles point was determined on court three in a tiebreaker.  Wildcat duo of Ariane Masschelein and Sarah Landsman clashed with Patricia Skowrnski and Emmanuelle Cor.  The Wildcats and Oregon tied at 5-5 and traded points back and forth and eventually tied at 8-8 to force the tiebreaker.  During the tiebreaker, Masschelein and Landsman were behind 1-3, but the Wildcat pair earned the next four points to go up 5-3, before the Oregon duo answered with a point.  After that it was all Wildcats earning the next two points to win the tiebreaker 7-4 and clinch the doubles point for Arizona 9-8.

With the momentum on their side, the Wildcats won four of their six singles matches.  In the No.1 spot No. 89 ranked Marks took it to Metzger dominating in two straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

On court two, Landsman gave Arizona their third point to go up 3-0.  The Syosset, N.Y. native won in a close first set tiebreaker against du Toit 7-6 (4).  In the second set Landsman went up 4-1 before du Toit responded.  Landsman eventually topped the Oregon sophomore 6-3.

Toporowska clinched the victory for the Wildcats after she defeated Mahdi Besovic in two sets, 6-2, 7-5. In the second set, Toporowska bounced back after being down 4-5.  The Toronto, Ontario native earned the next three consecutive points to secure the second set win.

Playing in her last match for the Wildcats, senior Ariane Masschelein went out in style.  The Marcinelle, Belgium native won a close 7-6 (4) first set tiebreaker against Skowrnski before dominating in her second set 6-1.  With the win, she gave Arizona their fifth and final point of the match.

On court three, Naydenova fell to Smatova 6-3, 5-7, 5-10.  Smatova earned the Ducks their first point of the match.  Rietsch also fell in three sets to Oregon’s Cor.  Rietsch topped Cor in the the first set 6-1, but fell in the next two, 2-6 and 4-6.

The Wildcats improve to 10-4 and 1-2 in the Pac-10.  Oregon drops to 5-11 and 0-4 in the Pac-10.

Arizona will next be in action on Friday, March 26 when they host California at 1:30 p.m.
