Four Arizona Swimmers Meet NCAA Qualifying Times on Day Three of the Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas (Dec. 3, 2000) -- The Arizona men's and women's swimming team competed in the final day of the Texas Invitational December 3. Some of the best teams in the country were present at the meet, which is a preview to the NCAA Championships held in late March.

On the women's side of the event sophomore Beth Botsford had an automatic qualifying time in the 200 back where she swam to the time of 1:54.77, a new meet record. Junior Erin Vogt competed in the 200 fly and captured the automatic qualifying time of 1:58.26.

Making NCAA consideration times on the women's team were juniors Lindsey Farella and Sarah Tolar in the 100 free with the times of 49.90 and 49.64 respectively. In the 200 back junior Jessamyn Miller made the consideration time of 2:17.15 along with freshman Jessica Wagner (2:15.37). Junior Maria Papadopoulou (2:00.86) and Botsford (2:01.38) also made consideration times in the 200 fly. Junior Katie Zimbone swam the 1650 free today in a time of 16:35.33.

 
 

Also swimming for the Wildcat's today was junior Julie Manitt in the 200 back (2:04.17). Freshman Kristen Brennan, sophomore Annie Joseph and junior Amy Bouta all competed in the 100 free.

Sophomore Jeff Dash, of the Wildcat's men's team, made an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200 fly (1:45.26) as well as senior Tyler Painter in the 1650 free in the time of 14:52.18.

Making an NCAA consideration time in the 200 back was junior Kris Souther with the time of 1:45.88. In the 100 free seniors Jay Schryver (43.92) and Scott Gaskins (44.64) along with freshman Eric laFleur (43.71) made consideration times. Freshman Greg Owen and senior Ben Anderson made consideration times in the 200 breast and the 200 fly respectively.

Other men competing for Arizona today were sophomore Tom Martensen in the 200 back (1:49.80), junior Peter Johnson in the 100 free (45.79), sophomore Dave Anderson in the 200 breast (2:04.14) and freshman Matt Sawatzki in the 1650 free (16:00.99).

The Arizona women's swimming and diving team will compete on Jan. 12, at home against Northern Arizona. On Jan. 13, the Wildcat diving squad will host the Arizona Invitational. Arizona's men's and women's swimming and diving team will then be host to California and Stanford on Jan. 19 and 20.
