Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller

"I thought we had a great team win tonight. When you look at the final score, and then remember the first five or six minutes, you can see the progress we made when the bench started us off. It's easy to see that there is no big difference between our starters and our bench. Going 41-22 on the glass against a very physical team was also a big boost for us. I think Derrick Williams was the best man out on the court tonight. He was dominant, and it was a combination of our bench, Derrick, and our rebounds that gave us this win."

"The first media timeout was closer to the twelve minute mark as opposed to the sixteen, so naturally, our starters were a little winded. We were very comfortable with switching them out. After only two games, I don't have all the answers when it comes to minutes and which combinations work, but we have a lot of day to day competition, and a lot of players are making significant contributions, so we have the ability to switch people in and out as we need to."

"Our starting point guard and our two guard combined for 2-14 tonight. They didn't score many points, but I saw good things from Momo (Jones) and Kyle (Fogg). Kyle made some great passes inside, and Momo ended the game with five assists. We started off against a zone defense, and weren't shooting very well. Then, Jordin (Maes) made a three, Brendon (Lavender) made a three, and Kevin (Parrom) made a three. After that, things really started to go our way."

"New Mexico State shot 39 percent for the game, and holding them to that percentage, this early in the season is positive for us. They're a very big, physical team, and we held them to ten offensive rebounds, and went 41-22 overall, which is great for us. Our man-to-man defense is good, can be better, but overall I'm seeing a very good defensive effort. Like I've said, we're at a much higher starting point on defense compared to last November."

"We have a great combination of players on our bench. Kevin Parrom played seventeen minutes, and had six defensive rebounds. Two or three of those rebounds were probably the best plays of tonight's game. One point he went coast to coast, and another he made a great pass to Brendon Lavender. He's a great contribution from the bench, and we may play him more as the season progresses."

Arizona Player Quotes

Derrick Williams

On the win:

"Honestly, I didn't think it would turn out like that. They were a good team, we just beat a good team. We had to go on a run in the second half. We started hitting open shots and broke it open."

On rebounding:

"Coach had been asking me to offensive rebound, or just rebound period, since I got to Tucson. I think he was happy with my effort tonight."

Kevin Parrom

On the substitutions:

"Coach talks about it everyday, we have to compete in practice every day. Coach tells the bench players there's not much difference between us and the starters. We just bring energy and look to score and get rebounds. We started kind of slow, so we came in and gave that extra boost. Coach mixes everything up, so I'm not with the bench, I'm with everyone. The sub pattern today was normal."

"In practice we talked about how they were going to press us and then fall into a zone. We expected that, it wasn't anything special."

Kyle Fogg

On the substitutions:

"Coach said we have a deep team. The second unit they are the reason we got the lead because we came out slow. Me and Mo had off nights. I couldn't hit anything tonight so I tried to help in other ways. Derrick was making me look good, dunking it every time I passed him the ball."

On Brendon Lavender:

"What you guys are seeing now is what I've been seeing in him in practice over the past two years. It's great to see him playing with the same confidence he does in practice. He could easily start for me and that's great. Anytime I have an off night I can go to the bench confident that Brendon, or whoever else can step in and hit shots. It really takes a lot of pressure off me. He's done a great job. That's what's going to make our team better. Last year I would have just folded if I had an off night, but now I look to see what other ways I can affect the game."
