NEW ORLEANS - University of Arizona assistant football coach Rob Ianello was elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association today here at the AFCA national convention.

Ianello joins UA head coach John Mackovic on the Board, which governs activities and business of the AFCA. Mackovic was named to the board last spring for a second tour of duty. Former UA coach Dick Tomey also was a member of the Trustees, a considerable honor among the coaching brethren.

Ianello is the Board's assistant coach representative and has been active in AFCA activities as the Pac-10 representative to the AFCA Assistant Coaches Committee and chairman of the Division I Assistant Coaches Committee.

Ianello and Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr were elected to the Board by members of the AFCA attending the national convention here this week.

The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 9,000 members from all levels of the profession.

Ianello completed his ninth year at Arizona in 2002 where he is the recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach. He previously coached at Wisconsin from 1990-93 and Alabama from 1988-89.

At the national convention, UA assistant coach Steve Bernstein, who coaches the defensive secondary for the Wildcats, was among "Buzz Session" leaders with a talk on 'Defensive Backs.'
