Los Angeles, Calif. ?- Arizona senior Dianne Hollands was upset in the first round of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Los Angeles.  Also on the first day of play, the pair of Hollands and fellow senior Maja Mlakar won a first round doubles match.

Hollands, ranked No. 7 in the nation, lost to Sacramento State junior Margarita Karnaukhova 6-2, 6-0.  While the match was Karnaukhova’s first of the year, the loss snapped Hollands’ four-match win streak.  In two tournaments, Hollands has yet to win a non-consolation round match.  Hollands will face Tulsa’s Daniela Muscolino in the first round of the consolation bracket Friday.

Hollands and Mlakar, ranked No. 1 in the nation, survived a close call by beating Harvard’s Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman 9-8 in the first round of the doubles bracket.  The win puts the pair of Hollands and Mlakar back into the win column, following a win and a loss in their only other tournament of the year.  They will next face Notre Dame’s pair of sophomore twins Catrina and Christian Thompson in the quarterfinals.
