TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona head coach Eric Hansen will lead the U.S. men’s swim team at the 11th FINA World Swimming Championships beginning on Wednesday inside Sinan Erdem Arena in Istanbul, Turkey. Three current Wildcats and three postgraduates from Tucson Ford Aquatics will be on the American squad.
Less than two weeks after shattering American records in the 100 and 200 breast at the AT&T Winter National Championships, sophomore Kevin Cordes will look to see how he stacks up against International competition. The reigning Pac-12 and national swimmer of the week will swim the 50 and 100 breast at the world event.
Postgraduates Matt Grevers and Clark Burckle will also swim for Hansen on the men’s squad. Grevers will swim the 100 free in addition to the 50 and 100 back. Meanwhile, Burckle will swim the 200 breast.
Current Wildcats Ellyn Baumgardner and Bonnie Brandon will swim for Chuck Batchelor’s U.S. women’s squad. Baumgardner will swim the 50 and 100 breast, while Brandon will swim the 200 back. In addition, postgraduate Christine Magnuson will compete in the 50 free. Baumgardner earned a fourth place finish at the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 100 and also owns the second fastest time in school history in the event. Meanwhile, Brandon just shattered the school record in the 200 back less than two weeks ago at the AT&T Winter Nationals with a time of 1:51.49.
This will be the third time Hansen has led the U.S. men at the FINA World Swimming Championships. He also coached the U.S. team in the 2006 event in Shanghai, China and the 2002 squad that competed in Moscow, Russia.
The meet will be televised daily on Universal Sports. The taped-delay broadcast will be aired at 8 p.m. (ET) each day of the 5 day meet (December 12th-16th) on Universal Sports, and then again at 1:30 a.m. (ET).
