Columbia, Mo. (April 12) - The No. 19 University of Arizona women's gymnastics team placed fourth with a score of 195.450 at the 2003 South Central Regional Championships on Saturday, April 12, before a crowd of 2194 in Missouri's Hearnes Center.
Arizona finished behind first-place UCLA (197.700), second-place Iowa (195.975) and third-place Oregon State (195.850). UCLA and Iowa earned the South Central Regional automatic bids to the 2003 NCAA Championships in Lincoln, Neb. on April 24-26. Fifth-place Missouri (194.825) and sixth-place Illinois (193.200) rounded out the field of six respectively. Arizona ends the 2003 season making its 17th-consecutive postseason appearance.
Arizona's team mark of 195.450 is the second-highest regional championship score is school history, topped only by Arizona's 1996 NCAA Championship qualifying score of 195.750. The Wildcats also posted a team score of 49.250 on bars, which is the tenth-best mark in school history.
Individually for Arizona, sophomore Monica Bisordi tied for third-place honors on vault with a team-high 9.900 and finished fifth in the all-around competition with a score of 39.300. Bisordi will advance as an all-around competitor to the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Jamie Duce posted a 9.875 on bars to tie for sixth-place honors in the event.
The top-two finishing teams in each of the six regional meets will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championship meet in Lincoln, Neb., April 24-26. The top-two all-around competitors and the individual event winners not on qualifying teams will also earn automatic bids to the national championship.
