TUCSON - A low-scoring game disintegrated in extra innings, and travel arrangements caused Minnesota and No. 6-ranked Washington to tie at 5-5 in the final game of the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic Sunday afternoon.
Tied 1-1 after seven inning, each team came up with four runs in the eighth. Washington opened with five hits including RBI singles from Aimee Minor and Jaime Clark, and a two-run single by Kathy Fiske.
The Golden Gophers answered promptly with a quick four runs of their own, highlighted by Jordanne Nygren's three-run home run to knot the game at 5-5.
Both teams were scoreless in the ninth.
Anne Thul hit a leadoff home run in the fourth to give Minnesota the first lead.
Aimee Minor singled to lead off the top of the fourth for the Huskies, moving to third on a double by Kristen Rivera. After the second out, Sarah Hyatt walked to load the bases, but Minnesota reliever Piper Martin struck out Amy Hanson to end the threat.
UW tied the game in the top of the sixth when Jaime Clark walked, stole second and scored on a single by Kristen Rivera.
Both teams had flight plans and agreed in a meeting with the umpires to call the game a tie.
