Arizona Women's Basketball Cruises to Victory Over Cassovia Bardejov

    TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona women's basketball team defeated Cassovia Bardejov, 89-70, in an exhibition game at home on Sunday. Sophomore wing Krista Warren led the Wildcats with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

    With 13:39 to play in the first half Arizona was only ahead by one, 13-12. The Wildcats then went on a 17-point run to pull ahead 30-12. Cassovia Bardejov answered with its own 14-7 run, cutting Arizona's lead to 37-26 at halftime.

    During the second half, Cassovia Bardejov went on a late run to pull to within six points (69-63) with just over four minutes remaining in the contest. Arizona ended the contest with a 20-7 spurt to ice the victory.

    Freshman forward Veranda James led all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while also pulling down eight rebounds.

    "Veranda is a player, she is still young and is going to be very good. She makes the most of her opportunities in the low post area," said head coach Joan Bonvicini.

    Three other Wildcats scored in double figures. Juniors Tysell Bozeman and Elizabeth Pickney and freshman Aimee Grzyb each scored 11 points. Pickney and Bozeman also had seven rebounds a piece. Senior Reshea Bristol led the Wildcats with eight assists.

    "We have a good team. We need to keep improving," said Bonvicini. " Our freshman are going to be very good."

    Guards Stela Vaselova and Katarina Timkova led Cassovia Bardejov with 20 and 19 points, respectively.

    The Wildcats open their regular season schedule, Saturday, Nov. 18 against Brigham Young, 2 p.m., in McKale Center.
