TUCSON - Arizona made the most of eight hits and had solid pitching from Leslie Wolfe and Wendy Allen to lead the No. 2-ranked Wildcats to a 10-0 victory over Western Michigan in Saturday night action at UA's Worth Wildcat Invitational softball tournament.
UA picked up a couple of runs in the first without a hit. Broncos pitcher Wendy Cannon walked the bases loaded, then threw a wild pitch allowing Courtney Fossatti to score, and Jackie Coburn lofted a sacrifice fly for a second run to make it 2-0.
Autumn Champion walked with one out in the second and after a second out
Lovie Jung tripled to left-center and Mackenzie Vandergeest doubled to
right to make it 4-0.
The Cats' Champion made a good throw on a base hit by Jaymie Voss in the WMU third to end a rally with an 8-1-5-2-6 relay play by picking off base runner Gina Dobbs after she rounded third.
Coburn smacked a three-run home run after Jung drew a walk and reached third when Vandergeest's fielder's choice was mishandled by the second baseman to push the lead to 7-0 i the bottom of the fourth. After pinch-hitter Erin Palomarez drew a walk and WMU pulled Cannon, Lisha Ribellia tripled to right-center to make it 8-0. Allyson Von Liechtenstein hit an infield single and an out later Courtney Fossatti drove in Ribellia and Jung singled in Von Liechtenstein for the final runs.
Wolfe pitched three scoreless innings and struck out four, with three hits. Allen earned the victory with two innings of relief, walking one and striking out five.
