Tucson, Ariz.-The University of Arizona's women's golf team is ranked No. 2 in the final fall edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
The Wildcats completed the fall season with a sixth-place finish at the Golf World Invitational and a seventh-place finish at the CGF Match Play Championships. Arizona also earned two tournament titles and one second-place finish during the fall portion of its schedule.
Freshman Lorena Ochoa occupies the nation's top individual ranking after a month that saw her capture medalist honors at the Golf World Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C., and finish with a record of 1-1-1 at the CGF Match Play Championships. Ochoa's title at the Golf World Invitational is her second of the season, while she also won the individual title at the Comcast/Dick McGuire Invitational in September. The freshman currently holds a stroke average of 71.36. Ochoa has also been named Golfer of the Month twice, in September and November by the College Golf Foundation.
Other UA golfers ranked in the poll include junior Cristina Baena and freshman Natalie Gulbis. Baena stands at No. 13 after a fall season that included three top-10 finishes. Baena closed the fall schedule with a stroke average of 74.09. Gulbis is ranked 15th in the final fall edition of the poll. Gulbis missed the Cats first two tournaments due to an injured back, but quickly rebounded as she posted a stroke average of 72.83 and two top-20 finishes.
The spring portion of the Wildcats' schedule begins Feb. 12 when Arizona will participate in the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
