Arizona Expands Lead in John A. Burns Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona’s Men’s Golf Team leads the John A. Burns Intercollegiate heading into the third and final round Friday. The Cats shot a 12 under first round and lead the competition by a single stroke. They used a 280 second round to bring their total to 20 under.

The Cats have a shot total of 556, six shots better than second place New Mexico. The Lobos are 14 under. Texas A&M used a second round 278, the lowest of the day to boost them from ninth to third. At 11 under, Arkansas is in fourth. Defending champion Auburn fell out of the top five into seventh heading into the final round. Host Hawai’i is in 14th place.

Tarquin MacManus held on to his first round lead with a second round score of 70; he is ten under for the tournament. Jordan Hammer of BYU, who is competing as an individual, broke the second place tie he was in after the first round. Hammer shot a 70 as well and trails MacManus by two strokes. James Kwon of SMU also shot a second round of 70 advance into third after finishing the first round tied for fourth.

No Arizona golfer was over par in the second round. Three Wildcats are in the top ten, the most of any team. MacManus is first and Jonathan Khan and Tyler Neal are tied for eighth at five under. Khan’s second round of 68 was the best on the team. Brad Nicholson and Rich Saferian each improved their position Thursday. Nicholson moved from 53rd to 37th with two under second round. Rich Saferian moved from 65th to 55th. Saferian and Neal each shot 72s, one of which was not counted towards Arizona’s total.

The John A. Burns Intercollegiate is contested at Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa, Haw., a par 72, 6,916 layout.
