TUCSON, Ariz.- The fifth-ranked Arizona volleyball used its fourth three-game sweep of the season to remain undefeated in front of 1,234 fans in its home opener, Thursday night. The Wildcats (4-0) defeated 19th-ranked Utah 30-24, 30-22, 30-22, in the first match of the 18th-annual Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic. Three Wildcat players recorded double figure kills in the match and senior Dana Burkholder had a season-high 47 assists in the win.
Despite hitting below .300 as a team for the first time in 2001, Arizona still recorded a very respectable .279 with 52 kills on 111 attempts and 21 errors, while limiting Utah (3-1) to a .068 attack percentage for the match. Utah hit .000 in the second game alone. Arizona out-blocked Utah 13.5 to 10 for the match and tallied 44 digs to the Utes' 30.
Wildcat junior Shannon Torregrosa led all players with 16 kills, followed by classmate Lisa Rutledge's 15 and senior Jill Talbot's 10. Talbot, who hit a match-high .533, became the first Wildcat player to record a double-double this season with 15 digs to her credit. Senior Erin Sebbas followed her team-leading effort of seven total blocks against ninth-ranked Florida last Saturday with a match- and season-high eight total against the Utes. In addition to Burkholder's 47 assists, the setter tallied nine digs and five block assists.
The Wildcats resume play in the Wildcat Classic on Saturday at noon against Louisville. Utah and Louisville will face each other on Friday at 5 p.m.
