Los Angeles, Calif. - The No. 41 Arizona women's tennis team upset No. 21 Indiana, 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday morning at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium. Arizona is now 7-12 overall on the season. The Wildcats will meet the winner of the afternoon match between USC and American University.
Although Arizona lost the doubles point by only taking one of three doubles matches, the Wildcats managed to come back in singles competition. The No. 5 ranked team of juniors Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands got the sole win in doubles competition for the Wildcats. The wins on courts two and three gave Indiana the first point of the afternoon.
Arizona quickly came back in singles competition, winning the first set on five of six courts. Junior Dianne Hollands evened the match score with a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 52 Dora Vastag at center court, and fellow junior Maja Mlakar gave Arizona a 2-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win at court two over Linda Tran. The Hoosiers only win in singles competition came in the sixth position as Indiana's Cecile Perton beat sophomore Iza Ferreira at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-1. Jessie Rochefort then won her match on court 5. The two remaining matches went in to three sets. Lone senior Debbie Larocque notched the win for the Wildcats as she defeated Indiana's Laura McGaffigan, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Arizona will next compete Saturday May 15 at 3:00 p.m. The Wildcats will either face American University or No. 6 USC in Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
