TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona volleyball won its second match of the day and of the season with a 3-0 victory over Marshall at the SunTrust Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The Wildcats easily handled the Thundering Herd 30-19, 30-22, 30-19 to improve to 2-0 on the young season. UA defeated South Florida 3-0 earlier in the day.
The Wildcats continued to hit the ball with deadly accuracy, killing 49 of their 89 attempts with only 15 errors in the match. The Cats tallied a final .382 hitting percentage. Junior Shannon Torregrosa rebounded from an off opening round match to lead the Wildcats with 11 kills on 29 attempts. She also had eight digs and three service aces, both match highs. Sophomore Christina Frost was perfect for the match with nine kills on nine attempts, she also recorded Arizona's lone solo block.
Setter Dana Burkholder had 25 assists while splitting time with newcomer Rochelle Ruen, who tallied 10 assists of her own in her first extended play of the season. Ruen's classmates Kelli Mulvany Kellie Burton and Jolene Killough each saw playing time in the win. Mulvany had eight digs and Burton and Killough recorded the first two kills of their careers. Juniors Stefani Saragosa and Lisa Rutledge had eight and six kills, respectively.
The Wildcats will face the toughest test of the young season tomorrow as they meet the ninth-ranked Florida Gators. The Gators won their first match 3-0 over Marshall and will be looking to avenge last season's 3-2 loss to Arizona in Tucson. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tucson time.
