COLUMBUS, Ohio-Arizona sophomore golfer Chris Nallen has been selected to represent the United States in the 2002 USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championships, it was announced Monday. Eight men and four women collegiate golfers will compete against counterparts from Japan July 17-19 at the Glen Club in Glenview, Ill.

Nallen, a 5-foot-11-inch sophomore from Blairstown, N.J., is currently rated No. 23 in the Golfweek/Sagrain performance index and ranks first on the Wildcat squad with a 71.52 stroke average. He has garnered five top-10 finishes and six top-20 finishes in only 13 events this season. Nallen and the Wildcats compete this week at the NCAA Championships.

The eight men's golfers are chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The players will compete on the recently-opened Tom Fazio course in Glenview, Ill. The tournament consists of three rounds, with the first round including doubles matches and the second and third rounds featuring 12 singles matches. Each match is worth two points, with halved matches earning one point for each team.

Last year, the United States team was led by Arizona director of golf and men's head coach Rick LaRose and women's golf head coach Greg Allen. Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes competed in 2001, while former Wildcat Natalie Gulbis competed on the women's side last year as well. The four members of the Arizona golf program helped the United States team to victory in the 2001 event.

The U.S. holds a 19-6 advantage in the event, which is coordinated annually by the Japan Student Golf Association. The 2002 matches mark only the fifth time a United States course has played host. Previous host courses include Pebble Beach Golf Links (1978, 1983, 1987) and the SCGA Members Club (2000).
