TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona football team held its third practice of its 2006 Fall Camp at the Rincon Vista Complex on Saturday night.

For a third straight day, spirits were high with high energy on both sides of the ball. The team continued to work on its daily drills, including individual and group segments, as well as shifting more attention to the special teams units.

The players put on shoulder pads for the first time this fall, which resulted in an intense and physical inside running period. Offensively, Chris Henry and Xavier Smith each ran strong behind the offensive line.

In the 7-on-7 skeleton passing segment, Willie Tuitama completed seven of nine pass attempts, including three to fellow sophomore Michael Thomas. Adam Austin also had a sharp session, completing five of seven attempts, including a pair to freshman Terrell Reese and senior Eric Sheehan, who had the longest reception of the day (20 yards).

The half-hour team segment to close practice featured a better mix of run and pass plays than in recent days. Along with Henry and Smith, junior college transfer Chris Jennings and freshman Glyndon Bolasky got carries in the drill. Bolasky’s teammate from Sabino High School in Tucson, Brooks Reed, hauled in two passes from Tuitama.

The defense held its own, however, limiting Tuitama to three of eight passing, thanks in part to a heavy pass rush. Freshman defensive end Ricky Elmore showed a quick burst off the edge and batted down a Tuitama pass. Later, junior corner back Wilrey Fontenot jumped in front of another Tuitama throw, breaking up the play. On Tuitama’s last pass attempt of the night, defensive ends Louis Holmes and Johnathon Turner came off opposite ends to meet each other in the backfield, sacking Tuitama (no contact).

The Wildcats will get to sleep in tomorrow before holding meetings in the late afternoon. The team will return to practice at 6 p.m. on Monday, again at the Rincon Vista Complex.

NOTES: The team held its annual Media Day in McKale Center earlier in the morning, thus the coaching staff and players took the night off from addressing the media following practice ... Day Three of camp again went off as scheduled with very comfortable temperatures ... Nearly 100 fans attended the evening workout ... Freshman defensive back Cam Nelson has switched jersey numbers to No. 20 (previously No. 18) ... Place-kicking specialists Nick Folk (place-kicker), Kyle McQuown (holder) and Garon McHone (snapper) had a perfect session at the beginning of the practice. Folk's longest attempt was from 35 yards ... Former Arizona fullback Pedro Limon attended Saturday’s practice, as did former UA basketball player Hassan Adams.
