TUCSON, Ariz. -
Wildcat fans, welcome to Cursty's Corner! I will be posting weekly journal entries so you can keep up with your Arizona Volleyball team, and be in the loop with what's happening both on and off the court this season.
Last weekend, we traveled to the big island in Hawaii to play in the University of Hawaii's annual pre-season tournament. Hawaii was so beautiful, but I must say that I enjoy the dry heat of Arizona so much more. The tournament went well as we went 2-1! On a positive note, a lot of the freshmen got to see some court time. They were all a little nervous going into it, but those nerves were gone fairly quickly. Courtney and Madi Kingdon received All-Tournament honors as they played very well. In the end, we took second in the tournament, only losing to Hawaii in three. Dave and the coaches were not thrilled with the team's performance in our last match against Hawaii. We did not serve with pace like we had done the previous nights against Witchita State and San Francisco. Simply put, we came out super flat. Going home we have a lot to work and we know there is always room for improvement, but I still think we did a good job in Hawaii.
The trip home was long! We took a red-eye from Hawaii to Phoenix, only to have to drive the hour and a half back to Tucson ... Just in time for class and study hall! Thankfully we had the day off from practice on Monday, but were back at it Tuesday in preparation of this weekend's Wildcat Classic. This weekend marks our first home game of the 2011 season! The team seems more excited than we were for the Hawaii trip. Playing at home is always fun because the fans are so supportive, and we just feel more comfortable in McKale. The competition will not be nearly as "advanced" this weekend, but over the past 3 seasons I have come to find that the teams that are not ranked, and the programs that are not as well-known, can be very unpredictable. So, we are ready to come out with our best game.
On a final note, I am super excited to have my best friend from UNLV, Leah Maurer, in Tucson for the weekend. She is now playing for Cal State Fullerton who we face tonight (Friday) at 7:00 p.m. Although she is my best friend, I won't feel bad beating them ... Bragging rights!
Well Wildcats fans, until next week! See ya later :)
