TUCSON - University of Arizona football trio of running back Ka?fDeem Carey, safety Jared Tevis and kicker John Bonano have been named Honorable Mention Performers of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards, it was announced Sunday.
The Wildcats, now ranked No. 24 by the Associated Press and No. 25 in the USA Today poll, upset then-No. 18 Oklahoma State, 59-38, Saturday night at Arizona Stadium. Now 2-0 under first-year head coach Rich Rodriguez, Arizona leads the conference and ranks ninth nationally in passing offense and is third in the Pac-12 and ninth nationally in total offense.
Carey scored four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) to total 24 points scored, good enough to tie for third individually in school single?]game history. Carey, with 26 totes for 126 yards, set a career high for rush attempts in a game. His 13?]yard touchdown reception on UA?fs opening drive of the second half was his second career receiving touchdown. He finished the game with four catches for 28 yards.
In his second career start, Tevis totaled nine tackles, including five solo, two interceptions returned for 32 yards and a PBU. He recorded his first career interception to thwart an OSU drive late in the first half. He added a second in the fourth quarter. Against Oklahoma State, Arizona?fs defense forced four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble), the most in a game since Oct. 16, 2010, in a 24?]7 victory at Washington State. The three interceptions were the most in a game since Oct. 29, 2011, in a loss at Washington.
Bonano was perfect in his kicking duties Saturday night. He was 3-for-3 on field goals with kicks of 22, 46 and 24 yards while also connecting on 6-of-6 PAT attempts. Bonano also handled kickoff duties with 11 for 674 yards on the game. He averaged 61.4 yards per kick and recorded four touchbacks.
The Wildcats will return to Arizona Stadium on Sat., Sept. 15 to host South Carolina State. The game is scheduled to kick at 7:30 p.m. and will air on Pac-12 Networks.
