TUCSON, Ariz. -
Niya Butts and the Arizona women’s basketball team (2-0) will open its regular season at McKale Center this weekend to host Cal State Northridge (2-0). The Wildcats will take on the Matadors on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m.
The CSU Northridge Matadors, under third-year head coach Jason Flowers, return eight letterwinners and four starters from last season’s team that finished 17-14 overall and 11-5 in the Big West Conference. This year’s squad features three seniors (Violet Alama, Jianni Jackson and Felicia Walker) and four freshmen expected to contribute immediately.
Preseason All-Conference selections Janae Sharpe and Ashlee Guay were a driving factor in the Matadors’ success last year. Sharpe was named the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 11.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. She led Northridge with 145 free throw attempts and added 55 steals during the course of the season to earn All-Big West Second Team honors.
Arizona is coming off an 83-82 win at UNLV, where junior Kama Griffitts (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho) erupted for 25 points on 7-for-13 shooting from behind the arc. Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) also added 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.
The Wildcats are 3-1 all-time versus CSUN, including a 3-0 mark in McKale Center in a series dating back to 1978.
