TUCSON - University of Arizona Wildcat women's basketball has accepted a bid to play in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The Cats will play at Utah State on Thurs., March 17, at the Aggies' Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The game time will be announced on Tuesday.
"Obviously, we are excited our season continues," head coach Niya Butts said. "We want another chance to take the court and become a better basketball team. We're looking forward to the opportunity to play Utah State. They play a competitive WAC schedule and I think we'll match up well with them."
Arizona is 21-11 on the season and finished fourth in the regular season Pac-10 standings. The Wildcats won 2-of-3 games played in the Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament and have won eight of their last 10 contests since Feb. 13.
Utah State is 17-14 overall on the season and 9-6 on their home court. The Aggies picked up a win over New Mexico State and fell to Fresno State in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. They finished third in the regular season WAC standings.
The Wildcats last played in the Women's NIT during the 2000-01 season when Arizona topped Pepperdine, 85-65, in the first round before falling to New Mexico, 75-62, in the second round.
"We're happy to get a postseason bid," sophomore guard Davellyn Whyte said. "That was our goal all season. We want to keep playing good basketball and keep improving. We're still working hard to prove ourselves and another game gives us another chance."
