TUCSON - Junior Brigette Del Ponte has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, as was announced by the conference Tuesday, after her excellent performance at the Cathedral City Classic.
Del Ponte, a Peoria, Ariz., native, hit .571 (8-for-14) at the Cathedral City Classic with two home runs and a double. The junior collected a team-best 15 bases while accumulating a 1.071 slugging percentage. Del Ponte had eight RBI on the weekend to lead the team. Del Ponte walked four times and did not strike out during the tournament. The Peoria, Ariz., native provided stellar defense at the hot corner, making a handful of impressive plays while not committing an error in 19 chances.
On the season, Del Ponte is batting .426 with five home runs and 18 RBI.
The Wildcat third baseman was cited along with Stanford's Teagan Gerhart, who was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.
The citation is Del Ponte's third of her career and marks the first time a Wildcat has received the award this season. It is Arizona's 135th honor all-time.
Arizona returns to action this weekend when it takes on College of Charleston in a three-game series, Friday, March 2 to Sunday, March 4.
