Los Angeles ?C The Arizona volleyball team took the first game from No.-5 ranked UCLA (11-1, 1-0 Pac-10) before losing the next three to the Bruins on Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion, in the Wildcatsˇ? Pac-10 season opener.? Game scores were, 27-30, 33-31, 30-19 and 30-27, as Arizona falls to 10-3, 0-1 Pac-10 on the season.

As a team, Arizona hit .151 (57-31-172) and tallied 14 blocks and five service aces.? UCLA hit .210 (72-34-181) on the night and finished with 14.5 team blocks and eight service aces.

Individually for Arizona, freshman Tiffany Owens led the way with a career-high 15 kills.? Junior Brooke Bruingrud finished with 11 kills on .370 hitting to go with eight digs, and senior Dominique Lamb tallied nine kills and seven blocks.? Junior Randy Goodenough posted her sixth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs, and sophomore Alanna Resch finished with a match-high 20 digs.? Freshman Paige Weber finished with 49 assists.

Arizona won the first game over the Bruins behind a .257 hitting percentage (14-5-35), holding UCLA to a .021 mark (14-13-48).

In game two, the Wildcats battled UCLA close the entire match.? Arizona was down 15-11, but used a 6-0 scoring run to take a 17-15 lead midway.? UCLA went up 25-21, but Arizona battled to tie the match at 29-29.? Arizona hung close, but the Bruins earned the win on a kill by Kaitlin Sather and a hitting error by Owens at the end.

UCLA took control in game three, using a .400 (18-2-40) hitting percentage to earn a 30-19 win.? Arizona hit .159 (15-8-44) in the match, and trailed the entire way.? Arizona fell behind early, 9-2, but cut the deficit to 15-11 midway.? The Bruins then went on a 10-4 run to go up 25-15, and cruised the rest of the way to go up 2-1.

Game four was close throughout, although Arizona struggled to hit .071 (12-9-42).? UA trailed 10-5 early on, but rallied to tie the match up at 16-16.? After a 4-1 run, Arizona held a 20-17 lead, but UCLA managed to tie the game back up at 24-24.? The Wildcats scored two-straight points to go up 26-24, but UCLA responded with a devastating 6-1 run to end the match and seal the victory.

Arizona will next travel to No. 4 USC on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
