TUCSON - Arizona vs. Nevada-Las Vegas, Game 1

Arizona took the opener of a softball doubleheader against Nevada-Las Vegas, 11-3, Sunday afternoon, using a 13-hit attack, some base running, pitching and a little power to rout the Rebels.

Arizona's speed gave it the early lead. Autumn Champion slapped a single over third base, stole second and third, and scored on a double by Wendy Allen to open the scoring for Arizona in the bottom of the first. Allen moved up on a fly ball and then scored on Jackie Coburn's bloop single to make it 2-0.

Samantha Quintero led off the UA second with an infield single, stole second and scored on a bloop hit that Caitlin Lowe stretched into a double. .

Coburn reached on an error with no outs in the third, and moved to the other corner when Shelly Schultz dropped a double behind the left fielder. Both scored on Samantha Quintero's double to right field to make it 5-0. Lowe was hit by a pitch and Candace Abrams drew a walk to load the bases. Vandergeest singled in two runs to push the lead to 7-0.

UNLV scored in the fourth to make it 7-1. Morgan Bostwick hit a two-out double and scored on Wendy Godwin's single up the middle.

Erin Palomarez led off the UA fourth with a solo home run, and Jennifer Martinez doubled. After Allyson Von Liechtenstein drew a walk, Lowe drove in two more runs with a double down the left field line, and UA led 10-2.

UNLV staged a rally in the fifth and scored two unearned runs to avoid a mercy-rule five-inning ending. Britney Hillyer reached on an error and Amber Campbell and Bridget Byrne beat out sacrifice bunt attempts to load the bases. UA pitcher Wendy Allen stuck out Brittany Freight, but Lisa Sampson singled to drive in Hillyer and Kacey Ellis' ground ball drove in Campbell.

But UA loaded the bases with a single and two walks in the bottom of the sixth, and Candace Abrams' sacrifice fly to right field brought in Quintero for the eight-run margin to end the game in six innings.

Allen struck out nine and improved to 8-0 on the year. The Cats improved to 35-1 and UNLV dropped to 17-20. Losing pitcher Jacque Kerrigan dropped to 14-14.
