TUCSON, Ariz. -
The Arizona volleyball team fell to No. 5 Stanford, 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17) at McKale Center on Friday night.
Senior Courtney Karst (Centennial, Colo.) led the Wildcats in kills with 14, sophomore Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) led with 17 digs and freshman Rachel Rhoades (San Diego, Calif.) led in blocks with five.
Arizona played the match without kills leader Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.).
Stanford came out strong in the first set, roaring out to a 7-2 lead, but the Wildcats came back within one and then tied the score at 15. The teams traded points, but at 19-19, Arizona took charge and pushed out to a 23-19 lead. The Cardinal was not finished yet, however, and scored six-consecutive points to take set one, 25-23.
In set two, the Wildcats and Cardinal traded points, tying the score four times before it reached 10-10. Stanford then went on a 7-3 run, followed by a 4-0 run to go up 21-16. Arizona fought back and got within one point at 21-22, but the Cardinal closed out set two, 25-22.
The Wildcats controlled much of set three, leading from the beginning, but Stanford stayed close behind, never coming within two points until tying it at 9-9. Arizona kept its consistency and maintained the lead, but again, the Cardinal did not let them pull away and tied it up three more times before the Wildcats pulled away, making the score 23-20. This time, Arizona stayed strong and closed out set three, 25-22.
Stanford pulled away early in set four to a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats stayed close, but were not able to overcome the Cardinal’s impressive blocking and match-high .364 hitting percentage and won the match, 25-17.
“It was a frustrating loss for us tonight,” Arizona head coach David Rubio said. “We put ourselves in position to win the first and second set, but we didn’t finish. There’s no consolation with this team anymore, we are as good as the top tier teams and we have to prove it.”
The Wildcats will return to McKale Center on Saturday, Oct. 22 to face No. 2 California at 7 p.m.
