Cats Roll Through Day One of Aztec Invite

SAN DIEGO – The Arizona men’s tennis team of Mario Urquidi and David Humphreys teamed up today for the first time this season along with Tom Wolff and Frank Chen in doubles competition at the Aztec Invitational at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.  Five Wildcats competed in singles competition with Chen and Jay Goldman both advancing to the third round.


The Wildcats are competing against USC, University of San Diego, UC San Diego, Pacific, San Francisco, UC Riverside, UC Irvine and host San Diego State.


“The guys rolled with the punches today,” said assistant coach Tom Lloyd.  “It was a very long day, but the guys are excited for tomorrow.”


In doubles competition, Urquidi and Humphreys teamed up and defeated Jose Sierra Short/Sangwan of San Diego State University 8-4 in the first round. Urquidi and Humphreys will continue doubles action tomorrow.


The Wildcat’s other duo of Wolff and Chen, fell in a close match to University of California, San Diego’s Jake Fellow and Junya Yoshida 8-6 in the second round.


After doubles, the five Wildcats competed in singles action where they won three out of four matches on the first day of competition.


Urquidi, who received a bye into the second round of Bracket A fell to Fernando Ristow of the University of Pacific in a tough tiebreaker. In the first set, Ristow took the set 6-3, but Urquidi bounced back and won it in the same fashion 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Ristow won 10-2 to advance.  In the consolation bracket, Urquidi faced Quoc Doan of UC Riverside. The freshman fell 6-2 in the first set and was defeated in a close 7-5 second set.


In the second round of singles in Bracket B, Goldman who also received a bye into the second round downed Stephen Stege of the University of California Irvine 6-1, 6-4 in his first fall tournament of the year. Goldman advances to the third round Saturday.


In his first tournament as a Wildcat, Wolff topped Vincent Nguyen of UCSD in Bracket C in the first round. Wolff won in two straight sets 6-3, 7-5. In the second round of competition Wolff fell to Michael Grant of USC 6-2, 6-3.


In Bracket D, Chen earned a bid into the second round and squared off against Peder   Steen of the University of San Francisco. Chen edged out Steen in a tiebreaker.  After dropping the first set 6-4, the sophomore came back and topped Steen 6-2 and then won 10-6 in the tiebreaker. Chen advances to the third round Saturday.  


Humphreys who is also playing in Bracket D, received a bye into the second round as well where he faced Joel Giger of USC. Humphreys fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.


Play will continue tomorrow and Sunday with all five guys competing in singles along with both doubles teams in a compass draw. Doubles will begin at 9 a.m. PT with singles to follow.
