University of Arizona senior Wendy Allen, winner of the UA's Ruby Award as the top senior female student-athlete a few weeks ago, has been named to the first-team 2004 Academic All-District VIII Softball Team for the university division.
Allen earned a spot as the group's designated player, the position she predominantly played this year, along with first base and pitcher.
Allen carries a 3.324 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in business management. The district honor puts her on the national ballot for the Academic All-America team selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Allen enters post-season play among national leaders in runs batted in with 70. She is hitting .393, with 16 doubles and seven home runs, plus sports an on-base average of .495 thanks to a team-high 33 bases on balls. She won her ninth game against no losses as a pitcher on Sunday at Washington, and has a 1.31 earned run average.
UA opens play in the NCAA Championships against Centenary at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
