????????????TEMPE , Ariz. ?C?The second-ranked Arizona baseball team put the tying run on third base twice in the final four innings but couldnˇ?t finish the final 90 feet, as the Wildcats dropped a 6-5 non-conference decision to No. 1 Arizona State at Packard Stadium on Tuesday.

?

????????????Freshman Bryce Ortega tried some late heroics when he led off the top of the ninth with a solid single to center off of reliever Ike Davis.

?

Sophomore Dwight Childs advanced Ortega to second on a sac bunt and a wild pitch advanced the first-year Wildcat to third with one down.

?

Needing just a fly ball to tie the game, pinch hitter Matt Presley went down looking on strikes for the second out before Jon Gaston grounded out to second to end the contest and quash the Arizona threat.

?

The Wildcats squandered another prime opportunity in the top of the sixth when T.J. Steele led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out off the bat of Weldon. With the tying run 90 feet away, Ortega and Childs both came up empty on the RBI opportunity as ASU reliever Stephen Sauer got both to go down on strikes and strand Steele.

?

????????????The Devils jumped out to an early lead when Davis, the reigning two-time Pac-10 Player of the Week who started the game first, made UA starter Mike Colla pay for back-to-back walks in the first inning with a bases-loaded two-run double that put the Devils on the scoreboard. ASU tacked on another run on a double steal attempt that saw Davis score from third before Rocky Laguna was caught at second for the final out in the inning.

?

????????????The Wildcats battled back to cut the lead to one at 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the second, with Weldon driving in one on single to left and Bryce Ortega adding another on sacrifice bunt.

?

????????????UAˇ?s season-long struggles on defense reemerged in the bottom of the frame when Brad Glennˇ?s fielding error at third extended the inning and led to two unearned runs on a single by Brett Wallace for a 5-2 ASU advantage.

?

????????????Weldon delivered another big blow in the top of the fourth with his second-run scoring single before coming around with Ortega on a hit-and-run double by Dwight Childs to tie the game at 5-5.

?

The stalemate didnˇ?t last long as ASU Marcel Champagnie drove home Keil Roling with a sac-fly in the bottom of the frame to give the Devils their third lead of the game with a 6-5 edge.

?

ASUˇ?s Sauer (3-0) picked up the win with two solid innings of relief, striking out three and walking one while allowing just two hits. Davis converted his first save of the year with the final inning of work in the ninth.

?

UAˇ?s Colla (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs ?C four earned ?C on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. After Collaˇ?s departure the UA pitching staff allowed just one more hit over the final 4 1/3 innings.

?

????????????The Wildcats will head to Los Angeles on Wednesday for their Pac-10 opening series against USC at Dedeaux Field. Thursdayˇ?s series opener is set for 7 p.m. with UA ace Preston Guilmet scheduled to make the start.
