TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona softball team won its second and third games of the Fall Classic Tournament on Saturday, shutting out New Mexico 8-0 in five innings and defeating Central Arizona College 4-1.
Junior Jackie Coburn led the Cats in RBIs, driving in three versus New Mexico with a three-run homer to left, and adding three more versus Central Arizona with another three-run shot in the bottom of the third.
Senior catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest had another outstanding day at the plate, going two-for-three versus New Mexico and one-for-one with a pair of walks against Central Arizona.
Sophomore pitcher Alicia Hollowell started both games, working a total of eight innings. Hollowell struck out 10 of the 12 New Mexico hitters she faced and went on to strike out 11 versus Central Arizona.
Sophomore pitcher Shelly Schultz relieved Hollowell in the fifth inning of the Central Arizona game. In two-plus innings of work, Schultz allowed one run on four hits in her second-ever appearance as a pitcher before Hollowell relieved her to strike out the last batter of the game.
The Wildcats will play in the final two games of the Fall Classic on Sunday versus the Hum-Babe Cats at 3 p.m., and against Pima College at 5 p.m.
