The University of Arizona women's basketball team is ranked No. 23 in the preseason Associated Press poll released on Tuesday. Preseason ranked for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, the Wildcats are also ranked No. 22 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. Stanford is the only other Pac-10 team ranked in the preseason AP poll, although Washington and Arizona State did receive votes for ranking.
Ten of the Wildcats' 2003-04 opponents are either preseason ranked or received votes for ranking. Texas, a potential opponent at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Hawai'i later this month, stands at No. 3. Stanford is ranked No. 6, LSU is No. 9, UC Santa Barbara is No. 18, and Virginia is No. 25. Washington, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico and Montana (another potential matchup in Hawai'i) were all among teams that received votes for ranking.
Arizona didn't receive votes for ranking in the preseason AP poll last year. The Wildcats earned 15 votes in the 2000-01 preseason Coaches Poll, after being ranked No. 25 in the 1999-2000 preseason poll.
The Wildcat women will play host to an Athletes in Action team on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in their final exhibition game. Arizona officially tips-off the 2003-04 season on Saturday, Nov. 22, against Northern Arizona at 2 p.m. in McKale Center.
