Wildcats have positive start at San Diego State Fall Classic

SAN DIEGO, CALIF--The Arizona women's tennis team played two positive days of tennis at the San Diego State Fall Classic.

In singles, senior Ariane Masschelein won by default after San Diego's Martie Raygada retired during the first set on Friday, and defeated San Diego State's Emma Cioffi 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday.

Sophomore Debora Castany defeated San Diego's Alexandra Demidova 7-6(7), 6-3 on Friday before dropping her match to San Diego State's Julia Trunk 6-1, 6-2 Saturday.

Senior Claire Rietsch defeated Cal State Northridge's Amira Massi 6-0, 6-0 Friday before defeating San Diego State's Naseen Eslami 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) on Saturday.

In doubles, Castany and Rietsch defeated Cal State Northridge's Jaworowski and Pulach 8-6 on Friday before taking down San Diego State's Trunk and Wais 8-6 on Saturday. Masschelein also teamed up with San Diego State's Emma Cioffi Saturday, and the pair defeated San Diego's Claus and Raugada 9-7.

Across town, at the 2009 Riviera/ITA Women's All American Championship Pre-Qualifying singles, sophomore Sarah Landsman lost to Duke's Monica Gorny 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Tomorrow, Rietsch, Castany, and Masschelein will finish up in the final day of the SDSU Fall Classic while sophomore Natasha Marks will compete in the 2009 Riviera/ITA Women's All American Championships Qualifying Singles.
