WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ?- Arizona sophomore Mark Melancon has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. The weekly honor is the first in Melancon’s UA career and it is the 30th time overall an Arizona pitcher has been recognized by the conference office.
Melancon garnered the honor after tossing three perfect innings in Arizona’s series victory over visiting Mississippi State last weekend. The right-hander appeared in all three games of the series, did not give up a hit or a walk and struck out seven of the 10 hitters he faced.
In Saturday’s 7-3 victory over the Bulldogs, he picked up his team leading third save of the year after entering the game in the ninth inning with runners on first and second and no outs. He struck out the next three hitters in order to end the scoring threat and the game.
Washington’s Brent Lillibridge was named the conference’s player of the week.
Melancon and the No. 10-ranked Arizona baseball team will kick off a busy week today (Tuesday) with the opening contest of a two-game series against UNLV at Kindall Field. The Wildcats will take on the Rebels again on Wednesday before departing for Southern California on Thursday for a weekend series against defending national champion Cal State Fullerton Friday-Sunday.
